B Vitamins Offer Hope In Fight Against Alzheimer's
(London) -- There's new hope in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. Oxford University researchers conducted a two-year clinical trial of around 170 elderly volunteers with memory problems. Brain scans taken before and after the trial showed that patients who were given extremely high doses of folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 experienced significantly less brain shrinkage than those taking a placebo. The British scientists say the study suggests high doses of B vitamins could one day be used to slow the rate of mild cognitive impairment, which is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's and other types of dementia. However, they stress that more research needs to be done to make sure such high doses of the vitamins can be administered safely and effectively. The study is published in the journal "Public Library of Science One." |
