Chest Compressions As Good As Defibrillation Following Cardiac Arrest
(Ann Arbor, MI) -- A new study shows that chest compressions work just as well as immediate defibrillation in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. Researchers at the University of Michigan Health System noted that people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital rarely survive, but did find that chest compressions were sometimes an effective way to keep a patient alive until emergency responders arrived. The American Heart Association recommends that bystanders immediately begin chest compressions when someone suffers a heart attack. The study is published online in "BMC Journal." |
