Appeals Court Temporarily Lifts Stem Cell Funding Ban
(Washington, DC) -- A U.S. appeals court has granted the Obama administration's request for an emergency stay to temporarily lift the ban on federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. In August, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth had ruled the research violated the law because it involved destroying human embryos. The lifting of the injunction will remain in effect while the U.S. Court of Appeals reviews Lamberth's decision. The administration's request contended his ruling is at odds with the intent of the law limiting federal funding of this type of research and will undercut ongoing research projects. Scientists working on those projects are seeking cures for conditions that include Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injuries.
