Obama Administration Requests Stay To Lift Stem Cell Funding Ban
(Washington, DC) -- The Obama administration is requesting an emergency stay to lift the ban on federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. In August, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ruled the research violated the law because it involved destroying human embryos. The Justice Department wants the U.S. Court of Appeals to intervene and lift the injunction pending appeal. The administration's request contends Lamberth's ruling is at odds with the intent of the law limiting federal funding of this type of research and will undercut ongoing research projects. The Justice Department says the research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, uses stem cell lines derived from embryos and follows NIH guidelines. Two biomedical researchers who filed the legal action against the stem cell research say it destroys human embryos and limits research funding for their own work on adult stem cells.
