Long-Term Weight Loss May Harm Health
(Hong Kong) -- Researchers suggest that weight loss over the long term may produce negative health results. They say compounds called persistent organic pollutants are linked to illnesses such as diabetes, hypertention and rheumatoid arthritis can be released into a person's blood. Lead South Korean researcher Duk-Hee Lee says such compounds are normally stored in fatty tissue. However, he points out that when fat breaks down during weight loss, they get into the bloodstream. Lee and his colleagues say that once in the bloodstream, the pollutants can reach vital organs. He also stated that additional studies are needed to determine if such harm outweighed the benefits to be gained by losing weight. The research is published in the "International Journal of Obesity."
