FDA Warns About Improper Labeling Over Green Tea
(Chicago, IL) -- Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and Unilever Group are being warned by federal officials about improper statements concerning green tea products on the company's labels and websites. In a letter from the Food and Drug Administration, the agency told beverage maker Dr. Pepper its Canada Dry Sparkling Green Tea Ginger Ale was misbranded. The FDA said the label improperly used the word "enhanced" regarding antioxidants from green tea. A spokesman for Dr. Pepper said the company has received the letter and will work with the FDA on the issue. In an earlier letter, the FDA wrote to Unilever saying the company promoted a Lipton green tea product in terms that would make it a drug subject to federal regulations. The product promotion cites research showing tea lowers cholesterol. The FDA also said Unilever made nutrient claims regarding the tea that are unauthorized. |
