NIH To Study BP Spill's Long-Term Health Effects
(Washington, DC) -- The National Institutes of Health will be studying the long term effects of the BP oil spill on the clean-up crews. The NIH announced Tuesday it'll use ten-million dollars from the petroleum giant for the multi-year study. Researchers hope to learn if either the crude oil or the dispersants pose a danger to workers' physical or mental health. The NIH plans to recruit participants from the many people who worked at some aspect of the cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico. That might include those directly involved in oil burning, skimming or booming, or with wildlife rescuers. People who trained for clean-up jobs but didn't participate will be used as a control group. Studies of other spills have shown that both the oil and the dispersants can affect the lungs, kidneys and liver. The Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 also caused a spike in anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress among Alaskans living near the spill site.
