Study Finds Link Between PTSD, Dementia
(Undated) -- A new study of veterans indicates that those with post-traumatic stress disorder have a greater risk for dementia than those without PTSD. Researchers looked at more that ten-thousand veterans 65 years or older. More than one-third had PTSD, with symptoms like avoiding things or people that reminded them of trauma, nightmares, difficulty in sleeping, and mood problems. Veterans with PTSD had twice the chance of later being diagnosed with dementia as veterans without PTSD. Researchers say more study is needed to understand the link between PTSD and dementia. The report is published in the September issue of the "Journal of the American Geriatrics Society." |
