Study: Smoking Marijuana May Help Nerve Pain Patients
(Undated) -- A small study is bolstering claims that smoking marijuana can help ease nerve pain arising from injuries or surgical complications. Canadian researchers tested the effectiveness of the drug in a blind study involving 21 patients with chronic nerve pain who had not been able to find relief with other treatments. The patients received three different potencies of cannabis and one placebo. Patients smoking the highest-potency strain three times a day reported less pain than those on the placebo. They also slept better and reported less anxiety. Researchers minimized the psychoactive effects of the drug by keeping the potency levels of all the doses well below that of the marijuana typically sold on the street. The study appears in the "Canadian Medical Association Journal." |
