Study: Women Can Reduce Risk Of Female Cancers With Surgery
(Undated) -- A new study indicates women who inherit certain genes can reduce their risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer with elective surgery. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes had a smaller chance of getting breast cancer by having one or both breasts removed. None of their nearly 25-hundred study participants who decided to have risk-reducing mastectomies had developed this form of cancer up to three years later. The study also showed women with those same genes who have their ovaries and fallopian tubes removed may cut their risk of ovarian cancer. The complete findings can be found in the "Journal of the American Medical Association." |
