VA Expanding Coverage For Agent Orange-Related Conditions
(Undated) -- The Department of Veterans Affairs is expanding healthcare coverage for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange. Under regulations published in the "Federal Register" yesterday, the VA will automatically presume that all veterans who served in Vietnam between January 9th, 1962 and May 7th, 1975 were exposed to the toxic herbicide. The new rules also add Parkinson's disease, ischemic heart disease and hairy cell leukemia to the list of disabilities presumed to be related to Agent Orange exposure. In addition, the VA has decided to review around 90-thousand previously denied claims from veterans seeking medical coverage for those conditions. The VA estimates the changes could cost the government some 42-billion dollars in the next decade. The changes are set to take effect in November after a two-month review by Congress. |
