Sports Concussions Can Damage Young Athletes' Growing Brains
(Cleveland, OH) -- With kids' sports injuries on the rise, one prominent doctor is warning parents about concussions. Dr. Paul Gubanich at the Cleveland Clinic says the damage from head injuries can take a while to show up. Gubanich says the damage can also be permanent, especially if there are repeat head injuries. His warning comes after Brown University researchers announced that concussions had doubled for eight-to-13 year olds from 1997 to 2007. An analysis of emergency room visits showed the rate of head injuries for 14-to-19 year olds was higher. Ice hockey and football topped the list of team sports causing concussions, while skiing and biking were the most damaging individual sports. The findings are in the journal "Pediatrics." |
