Doctors: Don't Keep Lice-Infested Kids Home From School
(Undated) -- The nation's pediatricians are urging schools to stop nitpicking over a few head lice. The American Academy of Pediatrics says schools shouldn't be forcing kids to miss class because they're infested. A statement from the group says that by the time schools notice the kids scratching away, they've likely had the bugs for three weeks. The Academy says, quote, "no healthy child should be excluded or miss school because of head lice." The lice are termed a nuisance and not a health threat like the flu. The doctors recommend schools abandon "no nit" policies that keep kids at home until their scalps are free of signs of infestation. |
