Report: Whooping Cough An Epidemic In California
(Undated) -- California health officials are now calling the state's outbreak of pertussis a full-fledged epidemic. The American Medical Association says the state has logged about 15-hundred cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, since January 1st. The state logged only 965 cases in all of 2009. Six infants have died of the disease so far this year, versus three in all of 2009. The AMA says the highly contagious disease can easily be prevented by vaccination. That has led health officials to conclude that either parents aren't getting the required vaccinations, or doctors are holding off on all the recommended shots because of cost. While Michigan and South Carolina have also reported a rise in the disease, which mostly strikes very young children and infants, neither state reports problems on the same level as California's.
