Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce

Chamber Corner for September 5th

NEW YORK IS STILL A GREAT STATE
Written by Todd Tranum, President/CEO Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier

In my job at the Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturers Association there is often a difficult balance between being the deliverer of ‘not so good’ information and communicating the positive points about the economic climate of New York State. Between national and regional news there has been a lot of ‘not so good’ news about the economy. Consumer confidence is still struggling. There are still a lot of people trying to find work. On top of it all the political process in Albany and the handling of the State budget has undermined public confidence in our leaders. Yet, in the midst of all the ‘not so good’ news we should not lose focus on the things that are good about New York State. At a recent presentation by Dennis Mullen, the President/CEO of Empire State Development, we were reminded that New York has a lot to be proud of. Here are some very positive economic development facts about New York State.

Population:
* New York State is the 3rd most populous state in the country
* Ranks 5 out of 50 states in share of population with Advanced Degrees (1 to 4 are MA, MD CT, VA)

Economy:
* We have the 15th largest economy in the world
* Our 2007 per capita personal income was $46,364, placing us 6th in the nation behind Maryland and 8th in the world behind Ireland
* Ranks 3 out of 50 states in value of Foreign Direct Investment (CA is 1, TX is 2)
* Ranks 3 out of 50 states in value of international exports (TX is 1, CA is 2)

* Ranks 2 in percent of total jobs that are “Gazelle jobs” (Gazelles are companies with annual sales revenues that has grown 20% or more for 4 straight years) (#1 is Nebraska) * NYS’ overall score for the New Economy Index has grown from 16th highest in 1999 to 11th in 2002 to 10th in 2008 * Ranks 1 out of 50 in small business investment.
* Ranks 7 out of 50 in microenterprises—the number per 100 people in the labor force.
* Ranks 1 out of 50 in amount of need-based college financial aid for undergrads.

We should not ignore that we have a lot of work to get done to restore New York to its dominant status in the national and global economy. But we too need to be reminded that New York State has a lot to offer.
