Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce

Chamber Corner for August 1

LEADERSHIP FAILING TO SET POSITIVE EXAMPLE
MORE MISSED OPPORTUNITY

Written by Todd Tranum, President/CEO Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier

The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier have long supported right-sizing the County Legislature. The fundamental reason the business community supports right-sizing the County Legislature is that it will help create an environment for more efficient government and decision making. We look to these leaders to set an example at the top that: government right-sizing can be accomplished, we can reduce the layers of government, we can create more efficient government, we can do better with less government and we can reduce costs. We look to the legislature to be the example that we can create a more cost competitive region.

We thank those County legislators who have supported right-sizing the legislature.

To those who continue to maintain the status quo we are asking for your leadership. Lack of leadership on this issue suggests to us that there is no will on your part to create more efficient government, reduce costs and create an improved business environment in Chautauqua County. Are we to assume that those legislators listed below, by their lack of action on downsizing themselves actually support big government and want to maintain the status quo?

Creating a cost competitive County is a critical component to economic growth, job creation and opportunities for future generations. Let’s create a more cost competitive County by reducing the layers of government. Let’s start at the top and set an example for the rest of the County.
