Prendergast Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Club |
| |
Entertainer Bruce Weaver of Knoxville, Pa., will present a program for children at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, at Prendergast Library.
Weaver offers a fast-paced blend of ventriloquism, singing, magic, laughs, surprises and audience participation. He and his friends have been entertaining at churches, schools, banquets, parties, variety shows, fairs, scouting events, pageants, and other special occasions for more than 30 years.
I try to control my mischievous little sidekicks, but to no avail. Edgar, Aunt Gabby, Sheldon, Chester Hound, and the rest of the gang always seem to steal the show! Weaver said.
His performance in Jamestown will promote reading and the resources of the library. Anyone signed up for Summer Reading Club or interested in signing up is invited to attend.
Weaver was raised in Wentling Corners, Pa. Shortly after he received a ventriloquist puppet as a gift at the age of 10, he began performing at local events. After he graduated from Clarion State College in 1970 with a degree in elementary education, he taught fifth and sixth grade for 35 years.
Early in his career, he included a puppet named Bruce when he entertained at school and community functions. In 1980, his cast of characters began to grow to his current group of more than 20. He usually chooses four to six puppets to introduce during a show.
Bruce Weaver and Friends will provide a very entertaining kickoff to the summer reading program, said Children s Librarian Valle Blair.
Summer Reading Club is designed for children who want to discover new books and take part in interesting activities. They can continue reading over the summer to help them prepare for school and have a lot of fun, too, she said.
The activity is open to any child from birth to 18 years old through Sept. 4. When children sign up, they get a reading record to keep track of what they read. The theme this year is Make a Splash Read.
Parents can even read aloud to non-readers, Mrs. Blair said.
Families may also register their children for story times for various age groups.
Summer Reading Club is supported by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
