Prendergast Library Seeks Book Sale Donations  |

The James Prendergast Library in Jamestown is accepting donations through June 1 for its 31st annual book sale to be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 11, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 12.
The majority of books in the sale are donated to the library from the community, said Director Catherine A. Way.
People have been very generous so far. They re spring cleaning early and making up for the fact that we couldn t accept donations during our building renovations last fall, she said.
Proceeds from the sale are used to buy new library materials.
We also add many donations to our collection, said Cheryl Johnson, chief reference librarian.
We need any paperbacks or hardcover books, except for condensed books, textbooks, or encyclopedias more than 10 years old, Ms. Johnson said.
The Prendergast book sale usually offers more than 40,000 books and draws buyers from all over the country, Ms. Way said. Many customers plan their vacations around it and travel long distances to attend.
There s something for everyone, Ms. Way said. I expect we ll have books on just about every subject that can be imagined.
The library will close at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 10, to set up for the sale, which features books arranged on the main floor in categories such as sports, health, business and travel. Collector s items, sets and books in excellent condition are displayed in the Special Room to the left of the library s entrance. Non-book items such as CDs and DVDs can be found upstairs.
Although we ve been preparing since the Monday after last year s sale, the June 1 deadline gives staff members time to sort the most recent donations, Ms. Johnson said.
