CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY
‘THE WORLDS LEARNING CENTER’
By Todd Tranum, President/CEO, Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce
Chautauqua County is blessed with spectacular natural beauty along with great recreational assets and cultural attractions. To leverage these strengths of our County the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau (CCVB) has led an effort to solidify a perception of the area as a unique destination and attract more visitors to our area. After reaching out to well over 100 attractions in Chautauqua County for input, bringing together several organizations and hiring a firm with expertise in the tourism industry the CCVB has brought forth a brand and tourism vision for Chautauqua County. The brand ‘The Worlds Learning Center’ is accompanied by the following vision for our area:
Chautauqua County expands the tradition of the Chautauqua education movement into the 21st century to become the World’s Learning Center. Leisure learning opportunities for visitors and residents abound throughout the county and throughout the year. The crown jewel of the World’s Learning Center is the Chautauqua Institution, the pioneer of the Chautauqua movement, where the brain feasts on a cornucopia of programs. This Victorian village is home to a nine week summer season of lectures, arts, and music, and other educational events throughout the year.
Other opportunities for learning come in many forms, such as workshops and “camps” to discover wine-making, engage in the culinary arts, cultivate gardening skills, master the golf swing, enjoy the camaraderie of quilting, study the natural history of the region, or explore spirituality in all its forms.
Visitors from around the region and around the world are drawn to Chautauqua County to pursue their passions, while also enjoying the variety of charming, historical villages and towns, each unique in ambiance, shopping, dining, and entertainment offerings.
The branding of Chautauqua County as ‘The World’s Learning Center’ distinguishes our County from other destinations. Chautauqua County has an enormous inventory of leisure learning activities that we can spotlight and market to the world. Andrew Nixon, Executive Director of the CCVB views this initiative as, “a long-term marketing program to build additional visitor interest in our destination area.” The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce agrees and endorses this initiative and commends the efforts of the CCVB and the organizations that have supported the branding effort. We view this as an opportunity for businesses in Chautauqua County to leverage this branding to either develop learning experiences as part of their business models and/or coordinate with events and activities that are developed around this branding to drive more foot traffic through the door. Overall this initiative is an opportunity to highlight the resources of Chautauqua County. Every community has assets that fit this unique branding opportunity.
It is important to note that the CCVB has launched a new version of their web-site at www.tourchautauqua.com which includes a section titled ‘What to Learn.’ There are 45 leisure learning experiences categorized into Culinary and Wine, Outdoor Adventures, Historic and Cultural, Chautauqua Institution, and Creative Camps. We urge you to go to the web-site to learn more about these leisure learning experiences. To learn more about this initiative you can reach the CCVB at 716-357-4569.
