Run For Literacy

Cummins Inc., Jamestown Engine Plant, will sponsor its fourth annual 5K run/walk on Saturday, May 8, to benefit the Prendergast Library Literacy Center.

Runners will begin at 9 a.m. with walkers following five minutes later.

The Cummins Run for Literacy begins and ends at the library at 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. Participants will follow the course s original design, which was altered in 2009 to accommodate construction on Prendergast Avenue.

It is a pleasure to be the event s sponsor for a fourth year,  said Angie Peck, community involvement leader and communications coordinator at Cummins Inc., Jamestown Engine Plant.

As a major employer in the Jamestown area, Cummins recognizes the importance of strong literacy skills. This partnership with the library benefits our community,  she said.

The Library Literacy Center trains volunteer tutors and matches them with adult learners to work on basic reading, math, and English as a second language.

The race is also the second of 10 races in the first Chautauqua Striders Runner of the Year series.

The Cummins Run non-refundable registration fee, which includes a commemorative T-shirt, is $17.

Registration and packet pickup will take place between 8 and 8:45 a.m. the morning of the race in the library yard on Fifth Street or in the Fireplace Room, in case of rain. Restrooms and changing areas are available inside the library, and refreshments will be provided after the race.

Parking is available in the library parking lot, adjacent parking ramp and on nearby streets.

Prendergast Library Director Catherine Way said she is very pleased to have Cummins continue its support of an event that benefits the library.

Since it began in 2007, the Cummins Run has grown larger each year, and we look forward to attracting even more participants this time,  she said.

Registration forms are available at the library or online. To ensure a T-shirt size, participants are asked to register by Friday, April 30.

Forms and checks, made payable to James Prendergast Library, are to be sent to Cummins Run for Literacy, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown, N.Y., 14701. People may volunteer to help at the event, and donations are welcome.

There will be awards for Overall Top Male and Female runner, and Male and Female first and second place in various age categories. Awards will be also given to walkers.

Miles of Smiles will provide timing for the event.
