Prendergast Library Sets National Library Week |
| |
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored annually by the American Library Association. This year's theme is Communities thrive at your library.
This would be an excellent time for people to see what s new at the library and get a library card. We invite people to come in and be part of the excitement, said Director Catherine A. Way.
The Children s Room will offer games for children from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, and Friday, April 16.
We ll have a variety of traditional table games such as checkers, chess, Connect 4, dominoes, Mandala and trivia, plus some newer electronic games for groups to play with the Wii, said Children s Librarian Valle Blair.
Additional gaming afternoons will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, and Friday, April 23.
Teens are invited to attend a book talk at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, about Into the Wild, an adventure story written by Jon Krakauer and later made into a movie with Sean Penn.
Presenter is Jamestown resident Elizabeth Wendt, who is working toward her master s degree in the Library and Information Studies program at the University at Buffalo. She will return to the library for another book talk on different titles at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1.
For adults, staff members will offer computer classes introducing the library s databases on Wednesday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to noon or from 2 to 3 p.m.
These quick tours of the databases will help people find information on subjects such as health, business, car repair and genealogy, said Megan Disbro, software training and Web specialist librarian.
Another computer class from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, will teach participants how to download digital audio books.
Local library cardholders have access to more than 1,000 audio books that can be downloaded and transferred to devices such as mp3 players and iPods or burned to a CD.
The reference staff has also organized a display of books written by local authors for the enjoyment of visitors during National Library Week.
These books show the relationship between the library and the community, said Cheryl Johnson, chief reference librarian.
All of the events during National Library Week are free and open to the public, but registration is requested for the computer classes.
