Prendergast Library Slates Book Talks

Elizabeth Wendt, a lifelong Jamestown area resident, will present two book talks at Prendergast Library this spring.

The first will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, on  Into the Wild,  Jon Krakauer s adventure book that was later made into a movie with Sean Penn.

The second presentation will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, about three books:  Monster,   American Born Chinese  and  Looking for Alaska.
Book talks are a great way to share information about reading,  said Library Director Catherine A. Way.

Ms. Wendt earned bachelor s degrees in history and social studies education. She is now working toward her master s degree in library and information studies at the University at Buffalo. Her goal is to earn certification to work in school libraries.

I feel very passionately about building a strong sense of community and values for youth and families in Chautauqua County by creating dynamic educational opportunities for students and adults of all ages,  she said.

She has worked with youth for 15 years as a mentor, tutor, and most recently a substitute teacher.

Although her presentations at Prendergast are free and open to the public, library staff members are hoping they will appeal to teens and pre-teens.

We re putting fliers about this in our new teen area and hope to attract this audience in particular,  said Assistant Director Tina Scott.

Ms. Wendt is an active member at First Lutheran Church. She serves at Red Lobster and the Italian Fisherman and volunteers at several local libraries and non-profit organizations. She enjoys reading biographies, gardening, travelling, and finding treasures at yard sales. She and her fianci, Jeremy, live in West Ellicott with their three dogs and two cats.

Ms. Wendt says she hopes to use her energy and enthusiasm to present many book talks at the library in the future.
