Prendergast To Discuss Fishing Adventure |
| |
Prendergast Library will host discussions of The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea by Sebastian Junger at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, and 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at the library.
Its plot involves the crew of a commercial fishing boat overwhelmed by monstrous weather in the North Atlantic.
This book is a nice package. It tells an exciting story, but you also learn a lot about fishing, said discussion leader Annie Greene, reference librarian and coordinator of the Library Literacy Center.
The author pulls you in with the characters and what it's like to be a New England fisherman. History and scientific information are all wrapped up in a story that s true but written as fiction because he wasn t there, she said.
The book follows the crew of the Andrea Gail, based out of Gloucester, Mass., as they encounter a fierce storm in late October 1991. All six were lost at sea while long-line fishing for swordfish more than 500 miles from home.
Early chapters give details about the fishermen s jobs and daily lives centered around activities at a popular waterfront tavern called the Crow s Nest. The latter part of the book attempts to reconstruct events at sea aboard the Andrea Gail and rescue efforts directed at several other ships caught in the storm.
The book was later adapted for a film starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. The author also created the Perfect Storm Foundation to provide grants and scholarships for young people from Gloucester and other maritime communities.
Prendergast Library's book discussions are part of a series called Talk To Me About Books, which began in 2008 with the support of a Community Service Grant from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.
Future titles are Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog and Your Life by Cesar Millan in May, Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks in June, and I Wish There was Something That I Could Quit by Aaron Cometbus in July.
Multiple copies of each book are available at the library about a month before the discussions, which are free and open to the public.
The library is located at 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. For more information, call 484-7135, Ext. 225.
