Nowadays, many women travel alone on business trips, for recreational trips, or whatever other reason might come to mind. If you’re a woman who has traveled alone, you might feel that your experience was a great way to meet new people – or if you weren’t so fortunate, it could have been a bad experience with unwanted attention or even becoming the victim of a crime. Here are some useful tips to make your next trip to a foreign country enjoyable and, above all else, safe.
Keep your papers in order: Before you go, make sure that your passport and visas are valid and that you have enough time to renew them if necessary. Leave information such as where you will be going, the phone number of the hotel, and any other contact information with a loved one at home in case there is an emergency. It’s also a good idea to make copies of documents like your passport and airline tickets.
Choose a safe hotel: When you arrive at your hotel, make sure that the staff is helpful and that it doesn’t give you a general “bad feeling”. It might make you feel safer to get a room near an elevator so that you won’t have to walk down a dark hallway alone. Some travel experts recommend using only the first initial of your first name and leaving the “Mr/Mrs/Miss” field blank when you fill out your guest registration form. If you have to leave your hotel key at the desk, make sure that a clerk takes it instead of just leaving it there without your seeing that it’s in a safe place.
Plan out transportation ahead of time: Talk to travel agents to make sure that the public or other transportation that you plan on using is reliable, instead of with someone seedy who might try to rip you off. If possible, try to arrive during the day so that you can get everything in order and settled in before it gets dark. Since every city has good and bad areas, should also find out ahead of time what specific locations you don’t want to be in after nightfall.
Pack your medications carefully: Some countries are strict about pills in unmarked bottles, so keep prescription medications in their original packages to avoid trouble. If you’re going to be gone for a long time, make sure that you have enough to last you until you get back home. If need be, you should also bring alone information about each medicine that you are taking and the names of the generic versions.
Be familiar with local customs: As the saying goes, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Foreign countries often have guidelines for women’s behavior that Americans aren’t used to, some of which we might consider to be unfair or double standards. Punishment for accidentally violating a social norm could range from stares and verbal disapproval to getting arrested. Look up as much information as you can and abide by those rules once you arrive at your destination to avoid any legal troubles.
Watch what you wear: Similarly, wearing the wrong clothing or accessories can also get you in trouble if you travel to a foreign country. Avoid form-fitting or revealing clothing if you’re traveling to a country where socially conservative clothes are the norm for women – clothes that you might think are normal in the United States could get you harassed elsewhere. You should also try to limit the amount of accessories that you wear, since a potential thief might not know that the stones in your ring or necklace aren’t real until after the person tries to rob you.

However, to lessen that chance that something happens to ruin it for you or even put you in danger, the best things to bring with you are ultimately common sense and knowledge.
