Top Picks for Travel Games By Kim Sabshin |

You’re going on vacation, and you know that you’re going to have a long car, plane, or bus ride ahead – and your friends have gotten so sick of “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” that they’ve permanently banned any renditions of it. Whether you have kids or are just impatient, here are my recommendations for travel fun.
Crossword puzzles: These are self-explanatory. Buy a whole book of crossword puzzles, or print them out – there are probably hundreds of sites where you can find them. I’m not a huge fan of crossword puzzles, but they can be fun for a while and have had the lasting popularity to make them a popular travel game choice.
Sudoku: On the off chance that you’ve never seen one, a sudoku puzzle is a 9x9 grid partially filled with numbers. The object is to fill the grid so that each column, row, and 3x3 box contains only one number (from 1-9) each, without repeating any. Aside from the daily sudoku puzzles in your local newspaper, you can buy books of them or even print out puzzles online. PrintSudoku.com has some printable .pdf files and is a great place to start, but it’s only the beginning.
Verbal games: These aren’t exactly original, but they can turn the sameness of a long trip into something positive. Some that I have tried include “I Spy”, counting out-of-state license plates, seeing how many of an object you can find before someone else can, “Twenty Questions”, and alphabet games involving everything from fruits and vegetables to NHL players. If you’re with a group of friends your own age and you know that the game isn’t likely to turn really awkward, try “Never Have I Ever” or “Truth or Dare” (yes, they can both be done in a car). If nothing else, you’ll end up passing the time by bonding and finding out more about your friends.
Handheld gaming consoles: Whether you own a Nintendo DS or GBA or a Sony PSP, there are plenty of options for on the go gaming, ranging from kids’ Disney movie tie-ins to first person shooters. If you own a DS, you can even take Guitar Hero on the road with you, complete with a “Guitar Grip” controller that simulates the full-sized one you play with at home. I’m not familiar enough with the PSP to offer any recommendations, but my nod goes to Donkey Kong Country for the GBA.
When you’re traveling, almost any car ride or long trip can seem like an eternity. Still, hopefully you will find at least some of these suggestions useful to keep you and your travel companions occupied until you reach your destination.

Planning a trip can be a stressful task if you are having a hard time deciding where you want to spend your next vacation. You have to think of things like what to do from the activities to points of interest and then hotels, airfare, and rental car. And you can’t forget to look at the best time to go based on weather and peak times for that area. To make your next family vacation a stress free fun experience plan your trip with Vacations Made Easy.
