Choosing the right wines for your wedding

There is one thing that all weddings have in common, with very few exceptions; there is always a bar, and there is always booze. And of the booze choices a typical wedding has to offer, wine is sure to be one of the available choices. But with so many wines available, it can be very difficult to choose the right wines to serve at your wedding.

The wine might seem like a small detail and perhaps you think just serving a wine that you like is sufficient. But the serving the right wines is important and there are some important details to think about when narrowing your selections. Consider the following:

What is the wedding menu? Although the point may be argued by some, it is the dinner, not the booze that is the focal point of the wedding reception, and if you’re going to serve wine you need to make sure you make selections that pair with the food you are serving. Basically, after you have decided on a menu select wines that will complement that menu.

Before and after dinner. Choosing two or three different wines to compliment dinner is essential, but most wedding reception start long before and continue long after the dinner is over, so you may want a few extra wine choices available for your guests. When making that decision consider the time of day your guests will be drinking; is it during the day or at night?

Also consider who your guests are? Are they highly sophisticated with experienced pallets or are they a box wine crowd? Knowing who your guests are will greatly govern your wine election choices.

In addition consider the time of year. A summer wedding would call for very different wines than a fall wedding when the temperature is bound to be lower.

Ultimately, you may need to speak to a professional to make your final selections, but those decisions will be much easier to make if you answer the preceding questions first. Knowing the answers to these questions will guide your wine selections, and help you make the right wine choices for your wedding.
