Hockey Hall of Fame By Kim Sabshin |
| |
Although the Toronto Maple Leafs have long since been out of the playoffs, their city still offers plenty of fun for hockey fans. If you plan on being in or around the Toronto area this summer, the Hockey Hall of Fame can give fans an afternoon of historical facts, interactive fun, and a good time overall.
The Hockey Hall of Fame was founded in 1943 and has been in its current location at Brookfield Place (formerly BCE Place) since 1993. Outside the building, visitors are greeted with statues of young hockey players leaning over their bench, ready to pose for pictures with anyone who walks by. Once inside, visitors see a wall of hockey pucks, exhibits of equipment used by many NHL legends, and much more.
The Stanley Cup itself stands in the center of its room on a pedestal, where fans can pose with it, hug it, and even kiss it. Visitors are allowed to take their own pictures instead of having to buy professional ones, unlike many other attractions. This room also contains trophies which NHL players have received, and fans may even find their favorite current player or league alumnus’s name engraved on them.
For younger visitors and even their older counterparts, the interactive portions of the museum are also entertaining. Visitors can stand in line for a chance to shoot plastic pucks at a virtual goaltender and watch as the goalie either makes the save or fails to do so. This area also features trivia, a bubble hockey table, and the chance to give play-by-play commentary for a clip of an NHL game.
The gift shop is large and offers items ranging from jerseys and T-shirts to shot glasses and replica NHL scoreboards. Fans from outside of Canada may have trouble finding merchandise related to their hometown team. However, there are still many unique gifts here and even if it is something small, all 30 NHL teams are represented.
Overall, hockey fans should find their visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame to be entertaining and worthwhile. There is no rush to get through the exhibits since visitors are able to move through them at their own pace. Since the displays are generally in open space or arranged so that visitors can easily pose with them, the Hall gives visitors many photo opportunities to share with friends.
The Hockey Hall of Fame is located at the corner of Yonge and Front Streets in Toronto, Ontario Canada. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children 4-10, and $12 for seniors over 65 (prices in Canadian and subject to change without notice). Children 3 and under can get in for free, and the Hall offers group rates as well.
